On March 17, 2009, CNUP members and other University alumni, faculty, and students visited legislators in the state capitol of Pennsylvania. Alan Sved, CNUP Co-Director, and graduate students Krishnamurthy Ganapathy Subramanian, Daniel Jimenez, Beth Siegler Retchless, and Erin Zimmerman, provided tangible examples on how state funding affects basic neuroscience research and both undergraduate and graduate education.
In addition, scientists provided expert opinion on mental health issues related to bills currently being considered in the legislature. CNUP members visited ten legislative offices, met directly with six state lawmakers from the appropriations committee, and staffed a table in the capitol rotunda with information on neuroscience and the brain. This event is annually organized by the University of Pittsburgh's Governmental Relations Office.
